FOSTER A DOG TODAY
Fostering a dog means giving a dog currently living in the shelter the time it needs to find its forever home while it lives in your home!
FOSTER GUIDELINES
1. If you are not an active foster you need to fill out a dog adoption screening form and get approved to foster. Write "interested in becoming a foster" where the form asks for the dogs name. This can be done on-line at www.tas.petfinder.com or in person at Pet Smart on Sundays from 12-3 (220 Commerce Blvd, Fairless Hills, PA 19030).
2. ALL fosters must do a meet and greet with all dogs in the house and the potential foster dog before the foster will be released into the home. There are no exceptions to this rule.
3. There are NO returns with fosters. Once a dog is placed in a foster home it is expected that the dog will remain there until it is adopted. Once the dog leaves the shelter it loses its spot there so we do everything we can to make sure you have choosen the right dog for your family.
4. If a dog is going to be picked up from the shelter an email must be sent to the shelter before the pick up time. This gives the shelter time to get the paperwork ready and it lets me know where the dog will be. If you want to do the meet and greet at the shelter, it’s by appointment only.
5. The foster family is expected to provide food, shelter, exercise and socialization for the foster until it gets adopted.
6. The foster family is expected to transport the dog to and from adoption events on Sundays and stay there and handle the dog for the event. We have an adoption event every Sunday from 12-3 at Pet Smart in Fairless Hills, PA. You are expected to answer questions about the dog and help place it in the most appropriate home. If there are extra volunteers it is acceptable for a foster dog to be dropped off and then picked up after the adoption event but this should not be a weekly thing. If you cannot commit to every Sunday that is acceptable but our dogs typically get adopt at Pet Smart.
7. If an issue with the foster dog comes up and the dog needs vet care the dog must go to Yardville Animal Hospital. You should immediately call me and give me a heads up and then call Yardville and make an appointment. If the dog goes to another vet we cannot reimburse the foster family for any fees. Yardville Animal Hospital gives us a discount and we need to stretch our money for as many dogs as possible. I can sometimes help with transporting dogs to the vet if need be.
8. All dogs in foster should be spayed/neutered. If the dog goes into foster and is not spayed/neutered it is expected that the foster family will bring the dog to Animal Alliance or Yardville Animal Hospital and have it done. The 501c3 will pay for it and again I can also help with transporting the dog to the vet.
9. All dogs in foster are available for adoption and will remain on PetFinder. There are no foster to adopt cases. If a person is fostering a dog and wants to adopt it they can fill out an application. However, if there are pending applications for that dog the applications will be screened in the order in which they were submitted.
