SUCCESS STORIES!
"On April 19, we found Paige at Petsmart.  We were immediately drawn to her adorable face and puppy eyes.  Paige has become the center of our home and life.  She enjoys chewing on all her toys (and some of our shoes!) and loves her bed.  We take her everywhere we can and people always stop to pet and admire her.  Paige loves all the attention she gets, and thinks that everyone she meets wants to play with her.  She loves playing with her new friends in her puppy training class and is learning all kinds of new tricks.  We couldn’t imagine our life without her now.  Seeing Paige’s face and wagging tail every morning makes us happy to wake up and makes coming home from work that much better.  We couldn’t ask for a better dog!" (written by Paige's parents)

If you adopted a dog from the Trenton Animal Shelter and you think his/her/your story should be featured on our "Success Stories" page, please feel free to send us some photos of your pup and a brief description of how your dog became a part of your family.

"For months I had been so strong.  I had been walking dogs at the Trenton Animal Shelter on my lunch break from work and had resisted the urge (dozens of times) to take a dog home with me.  I already had two dogs at home, one with special needs, and a third dog was just not in the cards.  Or so I thought.  Then one day I walked into the shelter and I saw this little brown ball standing at the door of her kennel looking up at me, tail wagging.  That was it, I was done.  I took her home that week (a year ago now) and she's been with us ever since.  She was supposed to be a foster dog, but she very quickly found a place in our hearts and now I can't imagine our family without her.  She didn't have the greatest start to her life, but boy is she making up for it now!  Turns out WE have a lot to thank Jade for, since she has taught us a lot about being grateful for what we have and about the power of second chances." (written by Jade's mom)
JADE (aka "Jade Monkey")
"My husband and I had been talking about adopting a second dog for months.  From the first second I saw her face in my email I was in love.  We drove down on Mother's Day to meet her and introduce our 12 year old shepherd mix.  He must have known that she was coming home with us because he was very casual about the whole affair.  By Wednesday (three days later) she was licking his ears clean.  Its been almost two months and we can't imagine our lives without her. Every night when she sits patiently waiting to be invited on the couch for a cuddle, I think of the first nine months she spent without us.  We are just as lucky to have found her as she was to find us." (written by Roxy and Sammy's Mom)

"On May 1st we adopted a pit bull puppy named Dr. House from you.  I wanted to let everyone know how he has been doing.  We renamed him Bear.  He is such a sweet dog.  He is doing good and has become close friends with our other dog Bailey.    Bear is just a love bug and loves to sit on the couch with us.  When I am home he follows me from room to room.   Bear is getting very big and it looks like he will turn out to be a very big boy.  He is a very smart dog.  He knows sit, give paw, down, stay.  Though we are still working on down and stay.  My family and I would like to thank you for letting us adopt Bear.  We are so glad that he is part of our family." (written by Bear's mom)

Meet "Mama".  This very pregnant female, with an amazing personality, was seized in a police raid and brought to the shelter just a few days prior to giving birth.  After giving birth in the shelter, we acted as quickly as we could to find someone who would be willing (and able) to foster mama and her EIGHT babies.  When the pups were 1.5 weeks old, we found the perfect foster mom that we had been searching for.  For the next 6 weeks, foster mom Connie and "Mama" worked together to care for Mama's large litter of pups.  For our part, The Shelter Animal Project shuttled Mama and baby Spirit (the runt who almost didn't make it) to the vet and back, administered shots to the puppies when they were due, and provided moral and financial support to foster mom Connie, who spent many a sleepless night caring for this family.  THANK YOU CONNIE!
When people ask us what The Shelter Animal Project does with the money we raise, we tell people that Mama's story is a great example of what we do.  We bring together people who want to help these special animals, and we get the job done.  We coordinate & finance travel and medical care for sick/injured dogs, we find people in the community who have the desire and capability to help and we give them the support they need to help us help these dogs.  Mama and her babies: getting them through the first 8 weeks and finding them ALL loving homes - that is what we do.  That is how we spend the money that we raise.

ADOPTION SUCCESS STORIES!!
Miss Patty now known as LUCA came to the shelter as a bag of bones.  She was quicky placed in a foster home and was allowed to strut her stuff as dog of the day at a Trenton Thunder Game.  As she gracefully walked across the field 3 fans spotted her and fell in love!  They meet her after her walk and adopted her a few days later.  She has been living the good life as the only dog in the house!  She has settled into her new home and is doing great.  She is dearly missed by her foster family!
Junior now known as HOOCH came to the shelter obviously very neglected.  He was so thin but it was very clear he had a ton of love to give to someone.  He was adopted into a home with 3 other dogs and an owner that fosters dogs.  He has quickly become a role model for his foster friends and looks fabulous now that he has the right owner that loves him.
BANDIT is one lucky dog.  He was adopted as a little puppy and we were unaware that Bandit was ill.  Just a couple days after being adopted Bandit started to show signs that he was not well.  His adoptive parents got him the proper (and expensive) vet care that he needed and he made a full recovery!  Bandit always shares toys, loves people and other dogs he meets and is as cuddly as can be. His adoptive parents couldn't be happier with him.
Below is BITSY (was Ginger).  Her new owner wrote "I wish I could share my story, I never thought I would own a pit bull ever.  Pit bulls are so judged but they really do just want to sleep, eat, cuddle, walk, and be loved... they love to give kisses.  They need to be helped not hurt.  But after a rough ride myself, and reading about pit bulls, I had to adopt one, and Ginger her eyes, it sounds weird we connected.  I knew when I saw her at Petsmart I could not leave her there!  She, after one day is becoming herself...   Happy to see us wake up in the morning , working up to her walking potential...It's funny, I don't even look at her as a pit bull, or scary, but when I introduce her people are a bit taken back,   Maybe I just see her kindness, and love that she needed.  Thank you for helping us find or me find what in life I needed desperately right now, to feel that kind of unconditional love, and walk again..... "

Meet SUNNY formally known as Snuggie.  This cutie pie was not so cute before his new family groomed and cleaned him up.  "We named him Sunny and love him so much. He is getting so much better with socializing. We take him for walks by the Manasquan Inlet and he is actually approaching small dogs (as long as they dont jump at him) and letting people pet him. Great progress.  We are so happy with Sunny and wish we could do more to help animals. I give you a lot of credit because I could never work in a shelter because it would break my heart or I would want to take them all home. "

ROY formally Freddie..."We honestly could not have gotten any luckier with our Roy boy! He is so amazing! Completely house broken, we taught him to "sit" and he sleeps with us every night and takes a nap with our son Brewer every day! He's very protective of our house "his territory" and he has a special spot that he lays/sits in every day in front of the window that faces the street and barks at EVERY person or animal he sees! But that's not a complaint, it just means he loves us ;) ...we had him groomed and shaved down to get rid of all the bulky hair, he looks like a completely different dog now and much younger and youthful! Thank you so much for caring for him and all the animals you continue to advocate so hard for. You are truly a gift to us for helping us get Roy and it makes me feel so good knowing there are people out there like you who genuinely have a heart for animals that have no control over their situation."
Hi, I’m Bentley (formerly Ross) and I was adopted on Saturday, September 24, 2011.  I am adjusting very well to my new home.  I have met my 2 brothers and my sister… they all came home from college to see me!!  I also live with 3 cats.  We are getting to know each other little by little each day.  Sometimes they need their space, and since I’m a gentleman, I give it to them.  I am really working on being house broken and I’ve had NO accidents thus far.  I go on walks everyday with my mom or dad to get my exercise.  I am eating and clearly gaining weight.  In my new house, I have lots of toys and a fluffy bed and blanket.  After my walks I like to relax, so I’ll nap on my bed or on the couch!  I would like to thank Lisa for helping me find this amazing family for me to live with.  I am healthy, happy and most importantly… LOVED!!!
Woof,
Bentley
